Denver Music Convening

The Denver Young Artists Orchestra will proudly co-host the first-ever Denver Music Education Convening in conjunction with the Colorado Symphony and El Sistema Colorado on October 3 and 4, 2019 at The Commons on Champa.

The goal of the convening is to identify and implement actions that increase equity, diversity, and inclusivity for Denver youth music education in a transformational, measurable, and sustainable manner.  Results from a survey administered to music organizations show that many local organizations put a high priority on these values. Over the years, there has been a decline in access to music and arts programming in schools across the country. It is the joint belief of the three hosting organizations that all students, no matter their background or zip code, deserve access to music education and programming.

The Music Education Convening aims to address this issue collectively in order to create a long-lasting music community in Denver and a new generation of future musicians in the city.  “The Colorado Symphony is thrilled to be a part of this effort to bring together local educators and music organizations who have been contributing to the music education landscape in Denver” stated Jesse Martinez, Director of Community Education for the Colorado Symphony. “It is our hope that this will begin to set the stage for diverse and meaningful collaborations moving forward.”  The idea of making a collective impact on music education in Denver has gained traction as of late, receiving support and funding from the Denver Foundation and the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation. In addition, Team Tipton consultants have agreed to provide expertise in research, analysis, and facilitation for the project.

Colorado Symphony Alliance

In July of 2018, the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and the Colorado Symphony Association developed a commitment to pursuing the shared mission value of music education in a strategic partnership that will allow young musicians from the DYAO greater access and mentorship from the full-time professional musicians of the Colorado Symphony.

The greatest shared feature of the DYAO Alliance with the Colorado Symphony will include soloist performance opportunities between both organizations, music coaching, and mentorship fostered by Colorado's only full-time professional orchestra, masterclass opportunities for DYAO students with Colorado Symphony musicians and featured guest artists, new performance opportunities between ensembles, and a renewed fervor for volunteerism between organizations.

Both organizations will also continue their commitment to serving the area by performing the annual Side-by-Side performance, free to all members of our community and endeavor for even more events to connect with Denverites and beyond.

The Colorado Symphony is thrilled to renew our shared vision of music education and build upon an already longstanding partnership with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra.
