My areas of concentration are collage, acrylic painting and the printing process. I have a contemporary point of view and prefer to abstract the impression of an idea. However, there continues to be a central theme. My art must contain the elements of good design and color, which includes creativity and originality.
Catherine Calkins is a native of Webster Groves, Missouri and received degrees from Webster College and St. Louis University. She studied acrylic and mixed media techniques with Barbara Kowalski and was introduced to printing techniques, soft ground etching, collograph, chine colle and linocut under the instruction of Jane Peters. She studied monotype print techniques in workshops with Ron Prokrasso and with Tony Askey and Michael Vihil in New Mexico. During these workshops, Ms. Calkins began to incorporate all aspects of printing into her work. The advice and encouragement of her teachers allowed her to exercise a special kind of freedom, which allowed her to increase her creative confidence and to develop her own unique style.
