A few important reminders about seating auditions

  • Music for seating auditions will be available no later than 2 weeks prior to the audition date.  Please do not request or expect it any earlier.  If it is available earlier than 2 weeks before, you will be notified.
  • All auditions are blind (behind a curtain), except for concertmaster auditions for Conservatory and YAO
  • Musicians may not be asked to play all of the excerpts in the audition, but are expected to prepare all of them.

**We would like to stress that family and other outside involvement in this process is disruptive to the Music Directors, Members, Coaches, and Staff. The Music Directors and Coaches work with the members on a regular basis and are able to determine the best possible results for the ensemble based on each individual’s growth and strengths on their respective instruments and music. This is a training organization, and as such, we ask that you trust our professional judgment.

  • For more information on the seating audition process, please see the handbook on our website (link below)

YAO Seating Music

1) Auditions will take place on August 19th at DU Lamont School of Music between 9-12:30pm (sign in at room 130).  That day is for auditions ONLY (no rehearsal), so you will be emailed in the next few weeks with your audition time slot.  Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your audition.
2) All excerpts are from Shostakovich Symphony no. 5
3) Please only prepare the sections within brackets
4) Violinists – The top 4-6 from the preliminary audition will be asked to play a second audition for principal/concertmaster positions. This will happen promptly following the morning auditions (sometime around 12:30pm).  If you anticipate being in the concertmaster round, you should be prepared to stay the whole morning to hear the results and audition again.  If you are not present when top contestants are announced, you will forfeit your placement as principal. In the second round, you will be asked to play the asterisked excerpt in addition to some of the excerpts from the first round.

Note: there is no audition for percussion or harp
